I predict a blood bath in local retail.

Given Labour are threatening to impose GST on all internet imports (to create a level playing field?) the sooner the better!

It'll still be cheaper to order from the UK or US due to postage costs from over the ditch ;-)

I'm not convinced the "Amazon tax" is actually a good idea. I think what you'll actually find is shortly after it's implemented prices in New Zealand shops will rise in response by about the same margin. As sales taxes tend to disproportionately disadvantage low income earners it will be ordinary folk who find themselves worse off.

I'd would far rather the government apply taxation directly to corporate and other non-natural entities.

Just my view.

I foresee the demise of Amazon in 2020

Based on fundamentals of their business model and coming new entrants.

Winners will be the primary producers and end customers

Don't think the governments will have much influence as they lack the HR resource with intellect to make change. Shoot from the hit policy is not evenly laughable anymore.

I think this is just an excuse by Amazon to make more money from the 'Australia tax'

There are no real specials on there that you can't already get from local Australian retailers, Amazon will just stop Australians buying from their US and UK sites and ship everything through the Australian arm milking the consumer.
