what to do with UK work pension (not govt pension)

We've been living in Canada for almost 8 years now and I'm starting to think I ought to do something with the pension I left behind. I have 7 years of a full time govt pension (plus a few years of...

Re: Mosquitoes

Thanks everyone :-) We have a Mosquito Magnet (which is propane powered) which does a reasonable job but can't handle them all. I think you're right about dealing with the swampy areas... that's...

Mosquitoes

Hello! First time posting for quite a long time :-) We've lived in NS for almost 7 years now, and love it here. But what we don't love are the mosquitoes. And blackfly (though at least they're...

Re: Negotiating credit card interest rate - possible?

Yeah I mean that makes sense, it's just that every website and financial book out there says to phone to negotiate, and that most banks will move, even if just a little. It's depressing! So yes, I'm...

Negotiating credit card interest rate - possible?

I've decided 2019 is going to be the year I get a handle on our finances, which are not where I'd like them to be (putting in mildly!). I've read in a few books and websites that the first thing you...

Re: Online TV-watching options - help!

Yeah thanks for the info about the TV. I suspect we might just bite the bullet and get a 720p TV, probably a 32", and see how we get on. If it's really bad I'll be more motivated to sort out more...

Re: Online TV-watching options - help!

We can't get fibre here (as I said, rural, the only reason we can get 10mb is I contacted our local company when we built our house here and they put in cable so we could be connected!). That local...

Online TV-watching options - help!

Where to start. I live in somewhat rural Nova Scotia, and have cable TV. Unfortunately, most of the channels we get are SD (probably 70% of them). This isn't currently a problem because we still have...

Re: Going back to university - scholarships?

Thanks for the comments everyone! We're planning on applying and seeing how that process goes and what sort of credits he can get for his previous uni degree back in the UK; that will give us an idea...

Re: Moving to New Glasgow, NS?

I'd definitely recommend the Annapolis Valley (which is where we live :-) ) including Wolfville, Kentville and all the surrounding areas. We love it here. The wintery pictured is Lucketts, it's owned...

Re: Going back to university - scholarships?

I should have mentioned, we're self-employed. This makes finding the time to do the courses much easier, but raising funds harder!

Re: Moving to New Glasgow, NS?

There has been quite a bit on the local news about it recently; they have had a lot of issues with disposal of their waste water. Until recently they've been pumping it all into a pond but have now...

Re: Moving to New Glasgow, NS?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the pulp mill yet? Granted I've only driven past New Glasgow once, on our first recce trip, but the stench coming out of that place was just awful! I don't know how...

Re: Weather/Climate in Nova Scotia

In that case I should warn you, it can definitely be higher than mid-20s. I'm not 100% sure about the South Shore area, but certainly here in the Valley we have quite a few summer days that are in...

US ESTA application - is PR card 'for travel'?

We're going on a cruise in a few weeks and I'm applying for US ETSA visas. I don't remember noticing the last time I did this but these days it asks if I've ever been issued a passport or national...

Yes I've been using the new forms (another reason I wished I'd got on with it sooner, I'd made a start on the old forms and had to redo everything).

I think the only option is to tick yes and add...

Re: Citizenship application - time outside Canada

I gained PR on 15/10/2011. My period of eligibility is 16/10/2012 to 16/10/2017.
I was under the impression it was the gaining of PR that was the date that was used, not when we moved to...

Re: Citizenship application - time outside Canada

But I'm not looking to have those days counted. Those days are irrelevant except that they ask if I lived outside Canada during the period they're interested in. I did! That is all they ask, not 'did...
