Re: Medical insurance

Also keep in mind that even if your employer offers health insurance, it often takes 3-6 months of working there before you become eligible.

Re: Let's talk about cars

Most of them have their quirks, the smaller ones like the Toyota T100/Ranger & Mazda B2000/B3000/whateverthechevyiscalled tend to drive a little more car like, the bigger ones - especially older ones...

Re: How soon can I buy a car?

In CA, you have 30 days to re-register the car in your name and the plates stay on the car unless the current owner has personal plates on it that they want to keep. You can drive it for that long as...

Re: Let's talk about cars

CarMax tends to give you fairly low offers anyway and they won't be interested in a Towncar that old.

CL or ebay is probably your best bet, maybe Autotrader but there aren't that many people...

Re: Price of gas update...

Looks like premium jumped 8c overnight out here at my local Costco.

Fun.

Re: Deputation from the UK to the USA

TBH if somebody wants me to stay abroad, then change the conditions on me and offer a generous 25% pay cut, it wouldn't be a very hard decision to tell them what to do with that offer.

As you're...

Re: Car insurance, where to start (Houston)?

First, get yourself a US license. That's not exactly hard, and it does make a difference when it comes to getting insurance.

Second, I'd talk to as many insurance agents as you can to get quotes....

Re: Where to live when working in Manhattan?

The office is on the Upper East Side. I figured I'd either be looking at someplace way up the Hudson River or over in Jersey.

Re: Where to live when working in Manhattan?

I don't really want/need to stay in NYC, I'm not a big fan of big cities anyway but there's not going to be much of a chance for something else there.

To quantify "affordable" I'd have to find...

Where to live when working in Manhattan?

I'm talking to some people about a possible consulting gig[1] in Manhattan for a year, but for various reasons my wife isn't going to move across the country so I need to be able to support the house...

Re: Converting your UK Appliances to work in the US

In most places you still do, especially for local programming, but people tend to have cable anyway and aren't aware that you can get programming over the air.

Re: Converting your UK Appliances to work in the US

No, you need a step up transformer to go from 120V to 230V. Step down would be the other direction, from 230V to 120V.

Re: Anybody ever contested a speeding ticket?

Sometimes the court is willing to reduce the violation to a lesser one (ideally a non-moving violation) that doesn't incur points and an insurance hike. You'll still end up paying a fine, but the...

Re: Converting your UK Appliances to work in the US

Have you checked if either can deal with the appropriate voltage range (usually says something like 100V-240V on the label if they can)?

If not, then you need a step-up transformer and a fairly...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I don't think the problem is downstream of the engine. My guesses are either a tiny intake leak that allows just enough air in to weaken the mixture, fuel or ignition issues. I'd also check the...

Re: Car Dealer's Bank Fee?!?

I think the main mistake was to try and finance a car at a dealer. Try talking to a local bank or credit union for decent financing with fewer shenanigans, then go to the dealer - they might well try...

Re: Relocating to San Francisco - Where to live?

Parking in the Financial District is no fun and very expensive, so another vote for commutability by public transport.

As to where you live, it also comes down to affordability. San Francisco is...

Re: Price of gas update...

Gardnerville traditionally is cheaper than Carson City also, especially the two Arcos. I usually try to avoid filling up in Reno for obvious reasons.

Re: student loans

I'd be wary to take out a student loan that is not a federal one. Private ones are both a lot more expensive and there have been too many reports of shenanigans with them recently.

Keep in mind...

Re: Ok sayI give up on Jamaica and the Phillipenes

First problem is a visa. No visa, no problem with Obamacare.

And no, the ACA most likely can't help as most, if not all, pensioners here are on Medicare and getting private insurance at Medicare...

Re: Is this normal, or have I just landed a crap job?

Norwegian, maybe?

Iceland Air also has pretty reasonable fares across the Atlantic if you don't mind stopping in Reykjavik.

But yes, in general the fares to Europe seem to be highway robbery...
