Re: Depositing an HMRC cheque in Canada

The tellers won't know how the specific amount was arrived at, only that it is at least $100 and can be more depending on your banking history - it is decided behind the scenes.

The tellers are...

Re: Depositing an HMRC cheque in Canada

I'm sadly still intrigued by this. Banks' ABM cash policies, picked at random:

President's Choice: "Canadian dollar bank machine deposits will post to your account immediately but funds available...

Re: Depositing an HMRC cheque in Canada

The bank has to explain its holds policy to you if you ask them to. They will have documentation explaining it.

Yes, the machines are emptied and checked as you say - and not weeks apart.

But...

Re: Depositing an HMRC cheque in Canada

A mixture of what they have to do, what they have discretion on and the bank's policy.

It is true that the more you need access to uncleared funds, the less likely you are to be given it / the...

Re: Depositing an HMRC cheque in Canada

The banks have to allow access to at least $100 of "uncleared" funds in your account from a CAD/Canadian bank cheque. This amount can increase as you establish a good banking record, and they are...

Re: Shipping lists - my packing inventory is super vague

Ours didn't tally with the packers' list at all - pretty much for the reasons you have stated. I made up our own lists and presented those and the packers' lists, and both were copied, but they...

Re: Children's Immunisation Record

We went to great pains to get immunization records for our three kids - the doctor's surgery kept doing them wrong. Eventually we got them. The schools here - and we have registered at five schools...

Re: COPR and Passport renewal

Just had our kids' new passports returned - we had no problems at all. Processed and back with us within about 3 weeks.

My daughter's application needed countersigning (she is 11) - we hadn't...

Re: Presidents Choice Financial - anyone bank with these?

My Scotia branch don't put a hold on my sterling cheques at all (which is good for me as we often need the funds immediately). Not keen on the PC way, far too long to hold on to my cash.

I...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

I found the site has apparent contradictions in several places.

I am also grateful I have another 19 years before I truly have to worry. Maybe it will all have been made clear by then.

I will...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

It's working on the maximum 30 year rule until 2016, I guess, when they will no doubt change the calculator. Until then the only way to find out the true figure is to get a pension statement which...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

I think for us oldies they do add them on.

This is my calculation, if I input 29 years of work:

Years of contributions you already have 32
Years you can still make contributions 19

Your...

Re: CRA asked me for my UK income?

Sorry I meant figures from payslips - yes, indeed the tax years are different.

I have tax papers coming out of my ears right now and am clearly losing the plot (tax for both countries - for me...

Re: Presidents Choice Financial - anyone bank with these?

How does PC and/or credit unions handle Sterling cheques?

We use Scotiabank and pay in Sterling cheques regularly over the counter - so we do use the tellers quite a bit. But we're also looking...

Re: CRA asked me for my UK income?

We're poor. We get GST/HST rebate. We declared our UK employee income for 2013 (before becoming resident in Canada). I didn't think it was a big deal, just gave them our P45 figures.

We also...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

The frozen bit is getting confused. As Simon Legree says, the frozen bit refers to the amount of UK pension you draw on becoming eligible - that stays the same if you are resident in Canada, it does...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

That's the impression I got from the pension lady... Kind of "don't bank on ever getting a pension, you won't live long enough"..... Or "you may live long enough to get it, but not long enough to...

Re: Class 2 National Insurance for expatriates

To be absolutely sure, you should call Future Pensions.

I think what she was saying to me is that as I am 20 years off pension age, I don't have to pay now - think about it in say 10 years' time. ...

I don't know the answer to the first bit, but our COPR was stapled in our passport to one page, with the usual entry stamp and the document number noted below.

Your second question above - I also...
