Re: Retiring in Germany

To Eurotramp: I was confused by your comment, I always thought the word 'where' had an 'h' in it, sorry ;)

To Mike: I have been reading all your comments with interest. My son will be moving to...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

BTW - "Jacaranda" is a "her"! A 63-year-old her! Belize has an immigration policy for retirees, too, which makes the idea attractive, in some ways!

As to Piccolo's comment, re Zambia's...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Beginning to wish I'd never started this thread . . . . . . .

The idea of Belize is not as far-fetched as the last response would make out - I belong to a company that actually has a...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Glad it's not you! I suppose the name of the spider, the "recluse" tells that it's rather rare - mind you, the snakes are bad enough, if you weigh them against the good old British adder or viper -...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Oh my goodness - have been off the boards for a bit, so not following the thread! Ray, that looks awful - I hope it's better now? What *is* a recluse spider, and where do they come from?

Re: South African Films.....

Sorry, Yorkiebar, can't help about SA films - in retrospect, my reply to you was a tad "off topic", dealing only with Durbs, and no films (or bioscope, as we called it in my youth!). But izibear is...

Re: South African Films.....

I used to live in Durban some 30 odd years ago! Went back in 1991, very different - my upcountry friends very concerned, because I took a flat near the beach for a few months (was out there over UK...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Oh no, no way! Although I hate the cold climate, they do say that, apart from imported licenced "pet" species, the only indigenous snake here in UK that is poisonous is the adder! ;)

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Yes . . . I don't know that I would quite like to live with scary things like that again, even though wild things are, in the main, more scared of us humans than we of them!

Saw a TV prog once of...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Also, although on the plus side Queensland ticks all the boxes, after living in Africa and the Middle East, the downside is that it's tooooo far away from family, and you just have too many poisonous...

Re: Anyone moving out to South Africa

To the point of Safety versus smug pragmatism, Safety would win me any time. We all know that when our time has come, it has come, but I for one would rather die more peacefully than being...

Re: Anyone moving out to South Africa

Thanks for the thought, but our Health Service is very adamant - I take other meds too, you see. Somehow I've weathered the winter, so far! Not quite sure when Spring will be coming - but it'll be...

Re: Anyone moving out to South Africa

So if that's what Plett is turning into, how come others on this Forum, while having emigrated there, never lock their doors? I've lived in so many different places, and never could I live anywhere...

Re: Silly Me !

Yes, I do watch costs from time to time - rents seem sometimes on a par with Edinburgh, and the most costly flights seem to be SAA!! I don't have a driving licence, I'm ashamed to say - my son...

Re: Silly Me !

Peaksgal,

You give me heart - I think I need to visit SA again - maybe next year when I've some shekels saved - my late parents loved Hermanus, BTW! :)

Re: Silly Me !

Hi Mrs Petrie

Your post interested me greatly - I left SA 34 years ago, and never stopped missing it, as you'll probably gather if you read other posts of mine. I did go back 13 years ago, and...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Haha, I never had to reach for an umbrella, thankfully! - but I did have the unfortunate experience (Mum and Dad were there during and after the Revolution in 1974 - in Luz, in the Algarve) of having...

Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Hi Sunnydays

Thanks for all that - when last were you in Tavira? I only passed through it once, summer of 1974, with my late parents, who were living in Portugal at the time - they'd got sick of...

Smile Re: A Warm All-Year-Round Place to Retire

Thanks Becs, for all - I do have to say Crete has always appealed! My last boss used always to go there to chill - not sure if he perhaps had his own villa - he always returned to the same place,...

Re: Any regrets coming back to Blighty?

Definitely, Merlot - so very true! Been back in UK 30 odd years, and not settled yet! Not helped by trotting back to SA on long stay, and almost 2 years in Doha, either! Can't stand the weather...
