Re: National Insurance

Well for what it's worth that will help a little bit as you will not have any WEP on your UK pension as it's all voluntary or credit based.

Sorry to hear about the State pension. I hope the...

Re: National Insurance

Nun, were your three years of UK NI Contributions, Class 1, worked after April 5, 1975? The UK changed to earned NI contributions after that date.

Re: National Insurance/US SS/WEP on earned UK Pensions

You're welcome, Matt.

WEP applied to foreign pensions worked before a person emigrates to the United States is "legal fraud" on so many levels, including ironically no representation, no legal...

Re: National Insurance

Nun, I'm having a bit of a time understanding Part 3 of the SSA document you linked in that the US does have a Totalization Agreement with the UK.

Does this mean that any portion of a UK pension...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Nun, will probably able to tell you for sure. It looks to me as if you will have a GPO/WEP reduction on your SS benefit - calculated from the earned part of your UK Pension - unless you have thirty...

Re: National Insurance

Not to flog this thing to death, but I read this from SSA as:

Class 2 Self-employment NI Contributions are not applicable as Voluntary Contributions (but seen as worked contributions as Class 1)...

Re: National Insurance

I think I read somewhere in the UK Pension literature online about a Special Provision that you use Class 3 Contributions if you are expecting to reach State Pension age by April 2015, and you have...

Re: National Insurance

I agree with you on US reform. In principle, I'd prefer a standard weekly or monthly NI contribution divorced from earnings and a standard benefit amount on retirement based on years contributed.

Re: National Insurance

Hi Nun,

If you read the act repeal and looked at the actual law, the Sustained Earnings Threshold would be eliminated. I agree with you that benefits based on years of contribution are the best...

Re: National Insurance

Unfortunately you are probably correct for the time being, but it's a process that should be maintained. Right now it has co-sponsorship in the House of around 167 reps, and about 19 Senators in...

Re: National Insurance

You are right regarding the focus not being on Foreign Pensions, but if we can get rid of WEP it will include (I hope) WEP on foreign pensions. Of course if nobody supports the repeal by actively...

Re: National Insurance

From what I can see it's not what the Brits think, it's what the Americans think!

If you paid Class 2 self-employed contributions to the UK scheme, and you do not have enough US Sustained Earnings...

Re: National Insurance

Does anyone have any information on how work performed in the UK prior to April 1975 is handled by WEP?

April 1, 1975 was the date the UK system changed to a work based NI system.

Before that...

It all goes back to the US Social Security position that lower paid workers get a higher percentage return for the money they have put in the system in relation to Higher Paid workers. I...

If this is...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Hi Bob,

I'm actually in the same position and would appreciate any feedback you might now have on what to expect! Did you put your SS# on the UK form?

I'm taking US SS now, early at 62, and...
