Re: What happens to debts in UK when moving to Canada?

Re: What happens to debts in UK when moving to Canada?

Thanks.

This seems to contradict the justice.gov.uk site, which has a page citing the rules for those wishing to start a claim

PRACTICE DIRECTION 7C – PRODUCTION CENTRE - Civil Procedure Rules...

Re: What happens to debts in UK when moving to Canada?

That's a great explanation thanks.

In light of this, my original comment that a creditor is unable to obtain a judgement (and so start the process) against a non-resident, is correct?

I don't...

Re: What happens to debts in UK when moving to Canada?

That the contract between lender and borrower is under UK law. A Canadian court wouldn't be able to hear it.

May be different for big businesses that borrow / lend outside of the CCA.

I...

Does this apply to agreements made under the Consumer Credit Act though?

Re: What happens to debts in UK when moving to Canada?

You have to be resident in the UK to have a CCJ set against you. If you're not resident, you can have it set aside.

So, yes, Canadian courts can get involved, but you would have to have had the...

Re: Information for PR & new citizens having a baby

Congrats on the arrival, and glad the problem with CCTB got fixed.

Just as an aside, you can get CCTB on a Temporary Work Permit, with a SIN beginning with 9. You need to be resident for 18...

Firefighter Recruitment - Ottawa

I often see posts on here asking about firefighter jobs. Came across this and thought I'd share it.

The City of Ottawa are recruiting trainee firefighters. You must be legally entitled to work...

Re: Back with another Ottawa question

I got chatting with a worker in a hardware store in Ogdensburg, who had dual Cdn and US citizenship. She commuted from Mountain (south of Ottawa) to Ogdensburg, everyday for work.

Seemed no big...

Re: Walmart now has a British section

You can find marmite in the baking section of most supermarkets (given that it is a yeast extract).

Heinz now also sell 'British style beans' (complete with traditional blue label), made in...

Same in Ontario at the moment.

Paid approx $0.65 per litre (for propane) back in October, $0.85 just before Christmas. Some company complains that they can't get their stuff out of the States and...

For an LMO, don't they also need to provide tax return info to prove they are established and legit?

Re: canadian resident driving in uk on holiday

That's not true.

When borrowing cars in the past, I have taken out my own short term policy, using Aviva. The short term policy had absolutely no connection to the main insurance policy on the...

Re: canadian resident driving in uk on holiday

You're probably better off with a short term policy.

Aviva offer this:

Now, it says it is only valid for UK, EU, Oz or NZ drivers. You may...

Re: Catching flights from Buffalo NY

Also to note, whilst ESTA is not a requirement for a land border crossing, it does speed up the process as you don't have to fill in the questions on the green card.

They just grab the info off...

Re: Prohibited items - baby/children's goods

We moved in April 2010.

The only thing we didn't bring were the car seats, which were actually far more superior than anything available in Canada at the time (maxi cosi isofix).

We brought a...

Re: Shoutout to Ottawa CBSA: landing on visitor visa

Glad to hear it went well. When it comes to landing as a PR, if you do it at a land crossing near Ottawa, do Cornwall rather than Prescott. They're much more friendlier.

Re: Words that Canadians struggle with

In Ottawa, most folk struggle with 'Thank you', particularly when I've held the door open for them.

Funny enough, Ottawans also struggle with Ottawa. Apparently, I work in Oddawa.

Re: Documents to isolate? Shippers in tomorrow!

You'll need to record the serial numbers of things, which if I recall correctly, the shippers don't do.
