They will typically be stabilised adobe bricks - often incorporating cement - these are different beasts and thus can be compatible with concrete and cement. The best place to see them as they should...

I love working with lime and nothing beats the feeling of going into an adobe house which has walls coated in lime plaster and limewash along with the original beams, it gives it so much character....
