Re: Spain's export boom and economy bouncing back

For the price of a house in LA, you could probably buy the whole of Detroit. :D Not that anyone would want to.

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

I don't think there was a "good" president Bush. Just Dumb  and Dumberer.
And Paxo asked Boris the price of bread in an interview recently. BJ had a field day on the...

Re: Spain's export boom and economy bouncing back

Prima-face: no. It raises the cost of exported goods, thus making the producer less competitive. It also makes imports cheaper, so imported goods more attractive to buyers than home-produced stuff....

Re: Do you eat 'Spanish' food when you are in Spain?

Very true.
Ultimately it's still only food. No matter where it comes from. For most people, myself included, so long as it tastes nice, doesn't make me ill, is easy to prepare (i.e. whip off the...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

So I guess you didn't see the recent documentary about Detroit?
Precis: single industry city - cars. Except the car makers are closing down & pulling out. The population has dropped to one-third of...

Re: Do you eat 'Spanish' food when you are in Spain?

Oh yes. Pop into any transport caff along the autovias or main roads. They'll have "plastic" sandwiches in their fridges. They even specialise in the overpriced and soggy variety. British Rail would...

Re: Great Railway Journeys Tonight

That's a shame. When did you meet him?

I've only seen his TV programmes and he seems quite affable, camera-friendly and enthusiastic about his subject. He also presents well (leaving his garish...

Re: Should we retire in spain?

One thing to bear in mind about buying a house in Spain is that it tends to be a one-way ticket.

The housing market in Spain is not like the UK. So you shouldn't think that if your spanish house...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

I am in inland Andalucia and, as I say, my experience of local markets is that there is practically no local produce. What "food" there is sold (and most of the markets I have been to are white vans...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

If you stick to large conurbations: then yes, they probably are similar prices. Once you get away from cities prices seem to be much higher. Not just for food, but for most other things too (petrol...

Re: Spain's export boom and economy bouncing back

Yes. And I had hoped people would realise that I had understood that - and further: understood that I was using the £ / $ illustration as an example. Did I overestimate you?

Re: Spain's export boom and economy bouncing back

I don't think that follows.
For most of the 20th century the £ was devaluing against the $

That was due to economic inefficiency, closed shops,...

Re: Andalucia demolitions

ISTM the basic problem is that Spain lacks a lot of the organisation and efficiencies that the UK has.

For example: taxes. In Spain you are supposed to "magically" know what taxes you are liable...

Re: Spain's export boom and economy bouncing back

The biggest driver for house prices in London and its surrounds is the restrictions placed on expansion by the green belt.

That severely restricts the amount of land available for new builds. So...

Re: A new EU Bail-In?

Spot on.
Sunshine and it's by-products are Spain's largest economic sector: holidaymakers, fruit/veg and property sales. When you take those out of the equation you have a country like Slovakia.

I've started to use Hola (https://hola.org) (link supplied, as searching for "hola" unleashes a flood), too. Do you find it compresses video very much?

Re: 3 Month Registration - Staff not being so helpful

Heh, heh.
I bet you wish you hadn't asked, now.
This is a prime illustration of why so many expats have trouble in Spain. Even the "old timers" (no offence intended) can't agree who needs to do...

Re: Internet in the campo alternatives

I have a WiMax connecton (I'm using it now).
Essentially you have a small (30cm) dish with a fair amount of electronics where the LNB would be in a satellite dish - enough electronics that the unit...

Re: Its Not all Bad News !!

The IBEX 35 has risen over 28% in the past year, and is up over 50% from its low in May 2012.
(The only problem is that it's still at the same sort of level it was 15 years ago.)

Re: Demolition is proving difficult

Yes, sure. But owned by the state. That way the current occupiers don't get thrown onto the streets. The buildings are kept in good repair or vacated. Their presence (as state owned) is legal and...
