Re: Technology Project / Programme Manager - Moving to Melbourne

Hi Peter,

You sound exactly like me 10 years ago when I moved over. I had the same skills and experience as you, I'd even worked on Interactive TV projects for the BBC as well. Small world ...

Re: Australia heading for recession

"Wow, seems like finally we should get ready to pay the price for sending our troops to far off lands without any considerable reason. I hope someone learns a lesson from this recession."

Sorry,...

Re: Buying/building a house - Brisbane

Yes, I would say around $350000 will get you something like you've asked for in a whole swathe of suburbs - certainly in the northern suburbs within a range of 8K or so and a 30 to 40 min bus trip in...

Re: The Gold Coast - Work - Admin - Happy

I totally agree with the previous post - 37.5 hour jobs with no overtime are a thing of the past (with the possible exception of some government jobs ;-) ). Australia does have a different work...

Re: credit cards in oz?

Virgin did a credit card over here which was free and also has a long payback period. Unfortunately, they stopped doing them for new customers earlier this year - guess they couldn't have been making...

It's in the papers over here

The bird is a chestnut breasted mannikin. We get orb spiders in our garden - totally...

Re: Job Prospects in Sydney?

Hello,

With your skills and your sector experience, you'd be a perfect fit for the company I used to work for. They regularly employ people through 457 visas, and they also advertise directly...

Re: Anyone bought a house with an "easement" on the property?

We also brought a house that had a stormwater easement along the side of the block.

When we wanted to build a deck on the side of the house that went over the easement, this wasn't a problem as...

Re: Pro's and con's of Brisbane???

Having lived in Sydney Melbourne and now living in Brisbane, I'd say the pro's and cons of Brisbane are:

Pros

1. GREAT WEATHER!

2. Cheaper housing, certainly when buying property.

3. The...

Re: Day trip to Moreton Island

You don't have to stay overnight to feed the dolphins. You can do it as part of a day trip and catch the evening boat back. It's definitely recommended - one of the best day trips I've done, lovely...

Re: IKea??

Just go to the website - ikea.com.au. It has all the prices and locations so you can work out if you think it's cheaper. It's the same stuff as you can get in the UK anyway, pretty much.

Re: WA - is it humid today?

It was pretty humid last night over here in Brissie as well... 90% humidity and an apparent temperature of 28 for most of the night. A ceiling fan just doesn't cut it!

Re: Shipping of collectible airguns

Ahh yes, the crows. Regular as clockwork right outside the bedroom windows at 4am every morning. Let me know if you figure out a way to shut them up! I was contemplating a catapult as well, but not...

I definitely recommend the Virgin Super fund. Nice and simple, and appears to have good returns compared to my previous Super fund!

Re: Please somebody remind me what use Ants have...

Heh Heh. I'm with you on this one. I'm just praying we don't get the big biting black ones in the house, so far it's the small ones that don't bite.

I've found those little white traps you get...

Re: Flies and stuff

The flies in Brissie seem worse than they were last year - current theory is because of early spring storms that blew a lot of them in from the interior.

I was in Melbourne last week, though, and...

Re: The price of a kitchen-Australia...

If it's a new house, then seems a shame to rip out the 'old' kitchen if it just has a few cupboard problems. You could always just replace the door fronts with ones that fit. If you go to a company...

Re: The chickens have won the day again ......

But the contrary argument to those that say you'd get an hours more UV in the afternoon would be that you would get an hours LESS in the morning, which balances it out - so why is it a problem?

Re: Medibank any good?

Hi,

Am with Medibank Private but (touch wood) haven't had to use them yet.

I have found their premium increases a bit steep lately though - had a 10% increase earlier this year from them...

Re: Roof tiles, what's supposed to be under?

What sort of tiles do you have? Sounds like exactly the same setup to my roof - I've got concrete roof tiles on the battens and the house was built 10 years ago, so I'd guess it's nothing to worry...

Re: Does anyone work in the Oz TV industry?

Gaz,

I also used to work in TV in IT. Sydney is your best bet, but it is a MUCH smaller market than the UK. If you PM me, I can give you the names of the companies it's worth sending your CV to.

Re: DONT NOT USE - Moves R Us - Gold Coast

Likewise, don't use Backloads in Sydney. They were pretty cheap - but on the day of our move up to Brisbane they were due to turn up at 9am. From 10am to 2pm I made several calls to their office only...

Re: Caloundra versus Mooloolaba

A day and night are definitely enough time to check both of them out, as they are so close together (a 10 min drive away out of peak time).

Mooloolaba has more of a night life than Caloundra, but...
