Out of curiosity, what happens if the OP's naturalization application is denied? Does he stay a LPR, or would the denial result in removal proceedings?

Hi - the questions on the ESTA form are pretty clear. The only complication is the definition of "crime of moral turpitude", but in your boyfriend's case this is not an issue (burglary is a CIMT).

Hardship is relevant for immigrant waivers, and even then I'm not aware of any procedures to "expedite" anything. OP is applying for a non-immigrant waiver.

There's one case in US immigration history where a guy lost his US LPR status after a one day trip to Canada to "activate" his Landed Immigrant status there. I don't remember the details.
