Re: What exactly is better about the US?

Uber's everywhere now - at least it's out here in G-Vegas so I can't imagine it's not somewhere that's actually worth travelling to on a train.

Re: Cost of living/quality of life/best place for kids -- US vs UK

Hanover NH is a lovely place. The Brysons always intended to move back to England and they ended up staying eight years despite only intending to stay for five. All Bill Bryson's family live in...

Re: Brexit, pounds and savings

At the current rate all the bad news - (possible negative interests rates, 'Hard' Brexit, loss of foreign investment) seem to be priced in. Suspect it will fall some more and then begin to creep back...

Re: Cost of living/quality of life/best place for kids -- US vs UK

Yeah - much more seems to be funded through taxation at the local level in the US (schools etc..) than it is in the UK - hence UK council tax is lower as it pays less of a proportion. For me the...

Re: Cost of living/quality of life/best place for kids -- US vs UK

Again the problem is comparing like for like I guess (London vs Bay area or NYC). On the quality of life issue, a lot of my Generation (Y) in the UK seem to be stuck in a 'generation rent' style...

Re: Stereotypical bad rep or well deserved... what say ye?

FWIW I live in bit of a 'beer desert' here in North central Massachusetts but my town still has a brew pub that serves non pasteurized cask ale brewed on premises.

The craft brew industry here...

Re: If you had your time again...

Yes indeed - although I do heartily recommend the art museum - especially now it has taken on the Higgins Armory Collection. The American Antiquarian Society is also great - although it's really just...

Re: If you had your time again...

Wait - don't you live in Sudbury or one of the 'Ws'? That's pretty damn civilized. You should try living with the savages out here in Worcester County.

Re: Heroin use in the US.

Yes and the other factor is the reformulation of OxyContin into an abuse-deterrent formula in 2010. Most of the people who ditched Oxy after the change switched over to heroin (which is significantly...

Re: Heroin use in the US.

Foster parent here - Having a baby that's born addicted to heroin is difficult to manage because they are often born premature and have to go through withdrawal; they are irritable, held back in...

Re: Changing Perceptions Back Home: I Miss The Jealousy!

I think the average pre-retirement boomer (late 50s /mid 60s) has about $136,200 in retirement put away.

Re: Commuting to north Waltham MA - Newton, Arlington, Lexington or....?

Route 2 sucks. Bunch of my friends commute into Waltham from the Gardner / Templeton area. That's a bit mental to say the least. The first bit is actually alright but then you hit the Concord rotary...

Re: 2016 Election

I actually like the gridlock; aside from the quarreling over the debt ceiling and other amateur theatrics. After all, things are going pretty well right now. The economy is improving and the rate of...

Re: Looking at Bangor, Maine

Does your wife's family have any connection to Bangor or was the location plucked out of thin air so to speak? It's a nice enough place, albeit a bit remote. There's a fair amount of young people...

Re: Is 55k enough for a couple to live on in SF bay area?

This was very handy the last time I rented. I had a feeling the landlord was going to try and screw me out of the deposit so I deliberately waited until 30 days were up before chasing him. He tried...

I've heard Philly referred to as Bos-troit - I.E the history and architecture of a place like Boston but with the severe urban issues of Detroit. From what I've seen recently on various site this is...

GOT had been quite slow this season but it's really picked up in the last couple of episodes.

Re: If you could live anywhere in the USA?

It would still be somewhere in New England - Portsmouth NH, Northampton MA, the Cape, Brattleboro VT - maybe Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket if I somehow had loads of cash.

Then again I could...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Sorry for misunderstanding. I guess it's always been interesting to me how small these places were when they fought the war of independence. New York's population for example was only about 25,000 in...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

Boston was a relatively small town back when we were still in charge - it was only around 15,000 people. Philly was quite a bit larger at around 30,000 and that was the largest settlement in British...

Re: How "Foreign" is the USA ?

It depends. I get a lot of foreign news first (some of it quite obscure) from my right wing US friends on Facebook. There's a whole bunch that share stuff from the Fox News website. True some of it...
