I am not sure I would wait until the final months, it took 8 months to exchange my licence.
Admittedly they gave me a certificate that allowed me to drive in Italy, but it wasn’t acceptable to Hertz...

It is very hard. Italy has high unemployment and if you don't speak Italian then you will find it hard.

I think a lot of jobs are given to friends, so you need to let everyone know you are looking...

My UK licence had my country of birth... Malta, so this always added just a bit more fun for the Carabinieri when they checked my licence.
