Re: Interested to hear if many have moved to NZ to work at 48+?

On the positive front, I’ve found that the NZ job market doesn’t seem particularly ageist, so getting work should be relatively easy

Re: Missing UK Telly choices!

No excuse in 2019, you can get any tv you want from any country. Even my 89yo grandmother has ITV, BBC, Netflix, Hulu and the local streaming services on her iPad. Just use GetFlix, Kodi (incluided...

Re: Auckland or bust by xmas: districts to rent a house

I work in Penrose, got a house in Epsom, which was very convenient (Near Mt St John) - maximum 10 minutes to work, good schools, close to Cornwall Park, Newmarket, handy for the city and motorways...

Re: 8 months in Auckland...

Well it depends where you live but that is plainly not true for Auckland, probably 3 months max where it’s cold, cold being 11-13 degree days. I wear shorts year round.

Agree on the house quality...

Re: Super nervous Mummy!!!

They can be a bit precious about the NZ experience thing, I’ve found there is nothing special about NZ workplaces that you need NZ work experience for and there are loads of non-New Zealanders...

Re: Finding after a month in the uk

I think that's a reversal from say 15-20 years ago, NZ used to be a place where it was easier being poor, you could still have a good lifestyle. The pressure of things like house prices and rental...

Re: Finding after a month in the uk

The packed cafes and restaurants in Auckland, Wellington and other cities prove otherwise. Auckland is one of the best dining cities in the region, your lifestyle choices different but plenty of...

Re: Cairns or Sydney opportunity

I find it hard to compare Australian cities with US ones, other than population there is very little in common.

San Francisco would probably be a close comparison, but it’s still more like London...

Re: Finding after a month in the uk

We eat out all the time, Auckland is one of the better cities for foodies and there is no shortage of cafes and restaurants.

Prices vary a lot, a main at the average Thai place might be $12-16,...

Re: Debt In UK Immigrating To Australia

It will be forgotten, and it would be unenforceable in any other country without going through very expensive legal proceedings that would cost many times your debt in legal fees. Debt collectors may...

Re: Where to for a warm winter break?

Malaysian Airlines were offering $809 to Bali today, guess it's a bit of a pain to backtrack from KL though

Re: Nursing in New Zealand

It's entirely possible to work in Auckland and not live there, or just in outlying areas. There are plenty of hospitals and clinics in the region. Auckland DHB (District Health Board) is central...

Re: IT Jobs in NZ / Visa Applications / How Much $?

Don't stick with one recruitment agents, go for as many as possible. Basically apply for the relevant jobs on seek.com and customize your CV to emphasise your skills for that role. Different agents...

Re: Finding after a month in the uk

Mass shipping is very cheap, I read an article years ago about this and it’s cheaper, and better for the environment, to send a container ship of dairy produce/beef from NZ to the UK, than it would...

Re: Where to for a warm winter break?

I’d avoid Japan in July/August, the heat and humidity is really brutal and it’s not the sort of place with lots of resorts to relax and cool off.

i lived in singapore and it’s worse than that.

Re: Finding after a month in the uk

No, haven’t been. But Melbourne has markets like Prahran, Queen Vic, South Melbourne etc. Open 6-7 days a week, fantastic quality butchers, veges and a really good range of delis reflecting the large...

Re: Salary equivalents between UK and NZ

Big difference between those that are struggling and those that are poor at budgeting or managing their finances.

From the example in the news links

Income $8-10000

Rent $3100
Gas/Power...

Re: Where to for a warm winter break?

Problem with the Phillipines is you have to transfer in Manila - and it’s not particularly efficient or pleasant.

Re: Where to for a warm winter break?

Just a bit further, but Thailand and Vietnam are not high season that time of year. Thailand is actually low season, some good bargains to be had at hotels and resorts. Probably same airfare as Bali...

Re: Returning Melbourne after 7yrs

The grass is definitely browner in Melbourne. You’ve hit the nail on the head for me, most places have their pros and cons, very hard to settle in one place after living in different countries

Re: Salary equivalents between UK and NZ

NZ is quite a long country, climate varies a lot. I’m in Auckland and arrived in November last year, it’s been pretty good since then. This week is the first time it’s actually been cold this year....

Re: Salary equivalents between UK and NZ

Not sure, I’d expect the salary to be higher, maybe $130-$150k

in Australian and NZ contract rates are not as different from permanent salaries as they are in the UK
