I always recommend visitors to go clockwise - somehow driving south on SH1 is easier than driving north. As previously said you don't get the sudden view at top of Brynderwyns but if traffic is light...

I am an old migrant so my views don't represent many on here but think if you think of the trip as an adventure things are easier - take a 6 month rental initially to see if you like the area....

'Neverong' is good -put in shallow container across their path - they swarm all over it then go back to the nest and die - the others eat them there killing most off - sometimes takes a day or so...

Don't know how old you are, but many young couples are house sharing in Auckland for economic reasons - might be short term solution till you work things out. Gumtree - Auckland branch can be useful

They alternate coming back about every 12-18 mths and we have been over a couple of times - I think using up annual leave...
