Difficult to say, having never been to Aus.
However, having family still in the UK, I'm happier knowing that the UK is only an 7 hour plane ride away, rather than a 24 hour one.

We brought two dogs with us, one of which was 80-90lbs at the time. I don't think is a problem specifically with size. It may obviously cost more, but also you have to supply a crate that is big...
