It should be remembered that whereas in the west someone is more likely to spend their income getting on the property ladder than buying a flash car many Thais would rather live in a rented box so...

Go to Laos, way cheaper than Thailand, which is not the cheap destination it once was. Your wife will probably also be happier with you being in Laos rather than Thailand. ;)

Thats about GBP 2K per month.

If accomodation extra then you can live quite comfortably on that without too many excesses.

I've just been asked to attend an interview for a job in Surabaya working for a property developer.

Exactly. I banked with Mashreq and later Barclays but always used Al Rostamani Exchange for transferring funds out of UAE. Way better exchange rate than either bank and money always in my offshore...
