Re: Golf

My wife and I aren't especially competent golfers so we go to the 9 hole Vale de Milho near Carvoiero. They have a lot of Twilight offers or similar and usually advertise in the Portugal news. The...

Re: sun tan lotion

One other suncream-related tip: Poundland in the UK sell it (for a pound, unsurprisingly!) - it's available in a range of factors and is perfectly decent (unlike some that we got from Lidl last year,...

Re: Working Remotely

Wife and I both still pay UK NI so as to keep contributing to our eventual pension. We're both fiscally resident here (so declare and pay here) - wife has an "NT" UK tax code so is paid gross. As I...

There's nothing to stop you buying it in Boots in England after security at the airport.

Re: Birthday Cake baker

If you go to a Continente bakery counter they have a big thick book detailing all the cakes they can make - we got one for a birthday last year and it was actually cheaper and of better quality than...

Re: Mossies!

The East Algarve is (arguably) worse for mossies as many of the resorts have the Ria Formosa between land and beach - places like Fuseta and Cabanas can get swarmed with them sometimes.

Have...

Re: Snakes

I'm not scared of them, as such, but when you're picking lemons and realise "hang on, that's not a branch" they can give you quite a shock!

Re: Vodafone PT in English

Glad it was helpful - just remember to put your WiFi back on afterwards if you do it at home - I've forgotten a couple of times and then drained my monthly allowance on Mixcloud. Now I make a point...

Re: Toys r us

There was one in the strip mall near Algarve shopping that popped up at Christmas a couple of years ago but it was literally only there for a couple of months.

Re: Toys r us

There's one of these in Tavira http://www.centroxogo.com/esp/tiendas.asp

Also, Continente has big toy promotions a couple of times a year, one of which is always a month before Christmas. While...

Re: English Speaking Jobs

Congrats on taking the plunge and well done for finding something for yourself. Has to be said though that Portugal is hardly the land of opportunity right now - imagine landing in a remote Cornish...

Re: I have matriculated my car tax free ... here's how

Robert, there are plenty of long term rentals but they're easier to find when you're actually here - they're not well advertised online although you'll find some on casa.sapo.pt

I may know of...

Re: Vodafone PT in English

There's another way too:

While connected to 3G only (NOT WiFi), visit live.internet.vodafone.pt

Scroll to the bottom of the page and it will give you your balance and your remaining text and data...

Re: How much do you pay for electricity?

It sounds a bit much. We average about €90 a month, but we are here full time with heaters, aircon, washing machine, dishwasher now and then etc.

(2 of us in 2 bed apartment).

You'll probably end...

Re: Where to buy Puy Lentils

Try the health food shop on the edge of the market building - there are cafes and shops on the outside of two of the walls, it's on the one facing the big bridge. Not sure about puy but they...

Re: Anyone living in Praia Da Rocha or Portimao?

Oh no, I hope it wasn't Fagin's - we made a special trip there last year just before it closed for the winter and really enjoyed it - they said they were reopening around about now so I hope they...

Re: Anyone living in Praia Da Rocha or Portimao?

Well, oddly enough, the first time we visited Tavira we decided that we liked it but wouldn't want to live here...then we found a property we liked and it kind of went from there.

Every time to go...

Re: Info on moving to Portugal

In the Algarve you won't get registered at the state doctors without a social security number, for which you must be working, self employed or registered as as pensioner with an S1 from the...

Re: Anyone living in Praia Da Rocha or Portimao?

PDR is the place that won our heart and we still visit frequently...but now we live here (in Tavira) we always say we prefer just to visit "that end" and live somewhere that's a bit less frenetic in...

Re: UK Groceries

We have, via Algarve removals...it was a while ago but I think it cost about €25 for £150 of shopping which we had delivered to their Essex depot. We picked it up from their depot in the Algarve.

Re: Altura - your take.

Interesting to know - any particular restaurant recommendations in Altura?

And, just out of interest, what is particularly "stand out" about the pharmacy there? (Serious question)

Re: Altura - your take.

I'd personally rather live in VRSA, even though it doesn't offer direct beach access. Altura is nice enough but does get overrun with motorhomes and there's simply not much there.

Re: Driving to Lisbon

16.08 is a bit out of date I think, it was about 19 e/w when we did it a few weeks ago. The bridge is another couple of Euros.

PS. Don't know where you are headed in Lisbon, but going over the...
