If you fill in the 'contact us' form at http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal/hsbcpremier/apply or call them using their 0800 number you should be able to open an account by telephone..

When my parents opened HSBC Premier accounts they were given '6 months free' - i.e. they had 6 months to meet the £50,000 savings/investments requirement.

You may want to see if they still offer...

The 'British Bank of the Middle East' has actually been a part of the HSBC group since 1959.

HSBC only brought their first stake in Midland Bank in 1987 before taking full control of it in 1999.

With HSBC try one of their International Banking Centres rather than a branch..- the UK/London one is on 020 7991 7414 (or their US one is 1.877.850.4722 or 'Call collect worldwide +1.716.841.7542')...

lol - I don't know who you spoke to at HSBC but they have this wrong - most of their US branches are on the East Coast (though they are mainly in NY State where they are one of the biggest banks)

They give the VISA exchange rate and charge no commission, loading or any other fees.

Open a Nationwide current/flex account and use their debit card at ATM's rather than taking travellers cheques..

Having one of their credit cards is also a good idea for...

No - you would still owe the money.

However, its not going to go broke - it has lots of assets etc..

The problem is more to do with future growth prospects as they rely more on the wholesale...
