I'm heading off to San Francisco for a work trip end of this week and staying for 3 weeks. This is the first time I've been to the USA since we moved to Australia 3 years ago and I'm wondering with...

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

P.S. Byron is lovely, we just got back from a few days there, but there's plenty of drunken trouble in town on a weekend, I was surprised to hear its right up there in the violent crime stats.

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

Agree with this, whilst I wouldn't live in Surfers (I would have 20 years ago), the greater Gold Coast offers plenty of lovely suburbs.

Re: Ex-pats and money in Cyprus banks

They wouldn't by choice (unless they're crazy), but when the banks re-open chances are Capital Controls will be in place, meaning only small withdraws allowed every day, and limits imposed on...

Re: $1.48 to the £ today....this is getting ridiculous

Actually Hardly Normal must be hurting (or benefiting from the strong $). We wanted to replace our over & cooktop. Chepest online was $3,500 HN was roughly the same, we offered $2,000 and they...

Re: Looking to move over for work.

Sorry but

Yes, getting a permanent visa is not an easy process, I'd guess only about 20% of people qualify for one. You need very specific skills which are assessed by an industry body, lots...

Re: Looking to move over for work.

If you're looking to come over long term the first question is do you qualify for a visa. You could get a working holiday one but it only lasts for a year.

See http://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/yes-the-dollar-is-strong-no-the-rba-wont-intervene-20130226-2f2vj.html

The RBA are well aware of the effects of the high dollar, and show no signs of...

Re: gold coast info needed please

As for crime, we just caught the Sydney news & the stuff that happens there seems far worse, but then again its a much bigger town. Certainly crime seems far less than any UK city, but it the main...

Re: should i tell a smal fib for a tenancy application?

fib, its hard enough finding a place in Sydney. In some places any slight negative on your app will result in you being rejected.

Re: Dyson from uk or wait

Look at prices in both places, if you're shipping stuff in a container anyway its not going to cost you any more to ship it.

We brought heaps of new stuff and customs didn't bother to charge us, so...

Re: Monthly living bills in gold coast

We are a family of 2 in a 5 bed house, most costs would be similar everywhere in Aus however the one's I can remember (monthly)

Re: Move to Aus or stay put in London?

As Paulry said, the cost of living is Sydney beggars belief.

Speaking as an IT contractor on similar money to yourself, who moved to Sydney I think you will have much lower purchasing power in...

Re: Story from the UK "I feel like a stranger where I live"

*sigh* you misunderstood what I was saying.

Migration has been based on skills and education (recently). before that migrants came from a similar culture (not recently).

Anyway, seems I'm in the...

Re: Story from the UK "I feel like a stranger where I live"

I did used to live near Chiswick in the 90's and it wasn't somewhere I'd hold up as the other extreme either! Maybe somewhere like Richmond would be a better example ;)

Re: Story from the UK "I feel like a stranger where I live"

Go back 200 years and everyone who's non-aboriginal is an immigrant.

Point is those immigrants have largely been selected by Aus immigration for their skills and education (at least recently) or...

Re: Story from the UK "I feel like a stranger where I live"

Yes, my thoughts are its a cautionary tale and I hope it never happens in Australia.

This may sound hypocritical coming from a migrant, but I don't believe in uncontrolled mass migration such as...

Returning an item to Amazon Global/Cheapest parcel service?

Hi,
I recently bought some stuff from Amazon Global for the first time, seems a great service as they'll ship a wide range of things and even charge in Aus $.

However, one of the items (a posh...

Re: Regional NSW state sponsorship - software engineer opportunities

Any IT roles beyond PC and hardware support are pretty rare in regional areas, and if you could find one would pay a lot less than in the cities.

Fair enough, but no cable or Naked DSL is available for us, in fact I was very lucky to snag a port when we bought the house. We're not exactly rural either AFAIK getting naked is down to the...
