It's extremely straightforward. You can do a change of status to L-2 without leaving the country, and then obtain the actual visa at an embassy when you next travel abroad.

8 CFR 214.2 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)(l)(12)(i) "L-1 limitation on period of stay" says that the "clock" counts all years in any L or H status, so no it does not "reset".

Working remotely can work well as an interim option, along with regular VWP trips (2~3 weeks every ~3 months) for meetings and to get to know your colleagues. I've seen that sort of arrangement...
