I think your best route would be the Returning Resident one. On the UKBA website for the RR route, it states:

Great, thank you everyone. I've just got all the documents ready, just waiting until Sunday when I can get someone to countersign the pictures and I'll be sending it all away on Monday :D

Thank you for your clarification, WEBlue. Yes the second one (the residence permit) expired 28th August 2011. Like you say, it was valid for 2 years.
