Re: Moving back to UK - removal company recommendations

I used three different companies (US to UK, UK back to US, US back to UK).

The first US to UK move, I used Wheaton Worldwide. It was a partial shipment (a "lift van", I think, though it might have...

Re: Pet Transport Recommendations

I completely agree with your "one less thing to worry about" idea. Unless the costs are completely prohibitive, it makes sense to pay for peace of mind.

When I brought Suzy over to the UK in 2000...

Re: NI Contributions

Just a tip that if your browser won't open the pdf because of a pop-up blocker, try copying the URL and pasting it into a new tab. That worked for me.

Re: Experience/advice moving back to UK

I'm a UK citizen and am currently retired in the UK, though when I moved back here (from the US, twice - once in 2000 and once in 2006), I was working. As far as my own moves to the UK were...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

No, I have never taken out private health insurance in the UK. I have friends who are part of health schemes that are very good value, but is linked to them being former council employees.

I paid...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

I didn't leave the US specifically because of health care costs, but it was definitely one of the main considerations when I asked myself, "Do I really want to work in the US until I retire, and then...

Re: Question for former US residents re abandoning LPR status

Not exactly what you are asking, but I never had LPR status (I was on a series of different visas for 16 years). Not being an LPR/never being an LPR hasn't affected my SS benefits. One thing that...

Tips for reaching FBU in London?

There are several helpful threads on here regarding how to deal with US Social Security "pension" claims after moving to the UK. Up until now, I've had no issues getting through to the FBU helpline...

Re: Household bills.

I'd guesstimate a monthly gas and electric bill for 3BR semi at about £100-£150 per month, averaged across the year. That's for gas central heating and hot water, electric for everything else. You...

Re: feeling the stress getting ready to move back to the UK ( Scotland)

I returned after 23 years away, with a dog, to a rental. As you say, it's a lot more stressful than when you first leave. I don't recall ever asking myself if I was doing the right thing, or worrying...

Re: Work credit to receive retirement benefits

I don't think you can get a "combined pension". As far as I know, what happens is this (fake example, as I'm not 100% up to date with UK and US requirements and don't want to give wrong numbers).

Re: Hello from Canada

Personally, I'd be looking for proximity to public transport as a priority in retirement. Ashbourne, for example, gets great reviews in the "Move to ..." sort of articles, but doesn't have a railway...

Re: Navigating 401k Abroad: Navigating Provider Restrictions and Finding Alterna

Not this particular situation, but in another context, I found that no longer having a US address caused me problems with TIAA-CREF. I wanted, for example, to set up a Roth IRA to roll my 403(b)...

Re: Grad School in the UK

(This thread is almost 3 years old, so the OP has probably either found a programme already or given up on the idea). Thought I'd mention it in case you wonder why you don't get a reply.

Re: does UK have anything like Fbar or 8938?

I certainly didn't declare the existence of my 403(b) to HMRC until I started receiving income from it, in the 2016-2017 tax year. The Men in Black haven't knocked at my door yet, so I'm guessing...

Re: does UK have anything like Fbar or 8938?

Yes, just report in the overseas pensions section of the self-assessment. Same when/if you receive US Social Security pension.

Not sure about bank interest, as I no longer have a US bank account.

Re: does UK have anything like Fbar or 8938?

From my limited experience living in the UK since 2006, with a 403(b) in the US, the only reporting I had to do to HMRC was when I started withdrawing from my 403(b), at which point I had to pay...

Re: 🇨🇦➡️🇬🇧❓ I can’t believe I’m even typing this…

Leave the Bronco behind, unless you are prepared to pay a lot more for insurance, repairs, etc., and to struggle for a parking space (I know the UK has trucks and SUVs now, but that won't make your...

Re: Retiring in the UK - US/UK Tax Treaty questions

Glad to be of some help. A related comment is that if you expect to live to a ripe old age, the benefit of taking SS early/non-WEP'ed for a few years may not outweigh the possibility of receiving a...

Re: Retiring in the UK - US/UK Tax Treaty questions

That's what I did (took my US SS as early as possible, to avoid WEP before I hit UK state pension age).

Be advised that negotiating the tangled web of WEP takes ages, due largely to the ridiculous...

Re: Best savings options for people with 2 tax residents

I don't know how it works with regards tax, but for a short-term, flexible option, take a look at premium bonds. £50k maximum per person, and prizes are tax-free, no matter how big. The nominal prize...

Re: Moving back to UK after 35 years in USA.

Hello, Nun! You've helped me a lot in the past with finances, tax, IRS, 401k, and all that other painful stuff.

Not sure how much help I can be, but one company worth looking into is Rinkens. If...

Re: Canada to UK - checklist of things I need to do?

Thinking ahead to your pensions, you might consider the strategy I used to effectively transfer my overseas (US) pension to a UK pension. I preferred not to have to deal with the vagaries of exchange...
