Re: Keeping my UK bank account

If the issue is UK phone number that will also receive texts and which you can use anywhere in the world then service from Callcentric will do it for about USD6 per month. They will forward incoming...

Re: Giving in to the 9 year itch.q

Bringing the wife over as a visitor when the kids are relocating risks problems with the border agency, especially if you all travel together.
If I were in that situation I would send the wife over...

Re: Best money transfer and UK credit card

If (and only if) you indeed have "excellent credit in the US" you might consider applying, in the UK, for an American Express card. Not exactly a credit card, but near enough for 99% of purposes.

Re: Thoughts on 'move or purge' approach to household items

Keep your handyman tools if you have any. It's not just the money, over the years you will have thrown away tools that "don't fit your hand" or don't work for you in whatever way. And the ones you...

Re: What would be a good take-home salary in the UK?

Yep, that's why folks are going on so much about housing.
In UK housing is easily the biggest cost for most folks with transport costs in second place.
And if you know where you are heading you can...

Re: Live in UK but work remotely for US Employer

If we are talking six months, an alternative is to not move to the UK but merely visit the UK.
Entering on your US passport and staying up to six months would suggest you were a visitor.
That sort...

Re: Taking a leap! Moving to UK with kids and bare savings

No never been there, when I lived in Kuwait I used to have friends who travelled to Dacca (by then Bangladesh) frequently so heard all the stories about the hazards of motor-rickshaw travel :-)...

Re: Taking a leap! Moving to UK with kids and bare savings

I'm sorry I wrote Pakistan when it should have been Bangladesh. Of course back when I started working it was East Pakistan!

Yes, you can make it work. Sounds to me like you can do a couple of...

Re: Whats Hull like, anyone

I tend to agree.
The only reason to choose to live in Hull is because that is where you have a job offer. At that is reason enough right there!

Re: Taking a leap! Moving to UK with kids and bare savings

A awful lot depends on which part of the country your relative with whom you are staying initially lives.
If it is London or the SouthEast then it is relatively easy to get paid employment but...

Re: Buy used right hand drive car in UK

Yes indeed, older cars are much cheaper in England than in France. Perhaps half the price.
There are any number of sources.
A favourite ruse of friends of mine is to approach a car repair business...

Re: Child wants to fo to University/move back to UK

You say UK but the numbers you have quoted are (loosely speaking) for England.
The numbers are different (typically less) for Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland.
There are a lot of variables.
And...

Re: Could use some direction

What you are referring to is an exchange licence.
If you have previously held a British licence (no matter how long ago) then you can reinstate it instead of doing the exchange. That avoids the...

Re: Moving back to UK with 16 and 14 year olds

Yes, agreed. And 14 and 16 are, in a sense, convenient ages.
The 14 year old would need to be placed in a grade where he or she would be expected to sit GCSEs after two full academic years. This is...

Re: House is now worth a fortune, should I move back to U.K. buy a flat, winter in Sp

Quite.
It is not exactly good odds that the property bubble will not burst within 5 years

Re: House is now worth a fortune, should I move back to U.K. buy a flat, winter in Sp

If you are going to sell up I would suggest doing just that.
Bird in the hand versus two in the bush and all that. Property bubble may burst at any time, the past is not a reliable guide to the...

Re: Wanting to move back to the UK at 18

It seems like you have plenty of time to plan. So it probably makes sense to write to your relatives in UK and explain your hopes and ask whether they could offer any advice or other input that might...

Re: Are UK expat children covered by NHS on a visit to the US?

That is a useful document, it bears reading carefully especially as it applies to children (different from adults).
Though it's not obvious to me as to what is the legal basis for treating children...

Re: Are UK expat children covered by NHS on a visit to the US?

As others have pointed out, free of charge entitlement to most NHS treatment, including all hospital admission, is based on residency.

And assuming you are British by birth in the UK then your son...

Yes, contract and security pass demonstrate that you had a job offer and were entitled to take up work in Italy.
But they don't show that you actually did turn up to take up the job offer and...

I will guess you meant weather, as contrasted with whether.

Not much to say really, the weather in UK, Australia and Canada are each well known and easily researched. I wouldn't call any of them...

You piqued my curiosity, so I checked just now.
And, amazing!, for all practical purposes British Airways does not do unaccompanied minor anymore, from 1 May 2018 onwards.
American Airlines still...
