Welcome to the SF Bay area, you could not have picked a more expensive place to live but it is one of the safest, just stay clear of East Palo Alto, which is almost the opposite.

Please double check on USA banks they are very different from the UK ones, one of the best are the credit union ones, less interest and willing to loan much more $$$ for a much longer term at low...

FICO score gets affected if you close a bank account or cancel a credit card but it is not that huge, as long as you pay your bills you should be okay.
