The point is this: Being a UK Ex Pat in many countries of the world exposes the individual to hardships and risk that are not encountered at home. This includes much of the Middle East.

Not a bad contract for Saudi. The DQ is a good place to live, I'd get a cash equivalent value confirmed in writing though as the concept of accomodation can vary widely here.

The Al Hamra blast cracked the plaster in our villa. I thought the water heater had exploded.

As events unfolded that night I remember making petrol bombs with a german guy in case Al Romaison...

Not really. Laugh a minute usually. Been here long enough to understand the region a little however, and witnessed life at the sharp end here in KSA back in 2003-04. Compounds blown up, neighbours...

Just started 'Life', Keith Richards autobiography. Re-reading Carl Sagans 'Cosmos', a great book. Recently finished 'The border trilogy' by Cormac McCarthy, recommended.

I agree. Despite my list I like to visit the UK. After a six month stint in KSA I've been known to fall to my knees and cry in the booze and pork pie isle in ASDA.

I also like 'green and damp'...

Any data storage taken through customs may be scanned at the airport and held pending clearance.

This includes laptops, memory sticks, hard drives, CD's, DVD's.

It's random and rare but it does...

Interenet services in KSA are restricted (in Riyadh anyway). ISP's go through KSA firewalls which effectively block any website deemed to be immoral.

Nothing is private.
