Re: Any brits around Buffalo, NY?

Well, define relevant. :-P I still live in Albany... Though yes, that was a little bit of threadcromancy thar.

Re: Salary in NY as an expat

Well, I'll argue this to the extent that I know one person who gave up a high-paying job in Japan, moved to Texas, and is now flipping burgers, because he chose being with his (now fiance)...

Re: Nervous About Making the Leap

To expand slightly, besides the web site mentioned above, there are almost always groups based on interests your wife could look into. Barnes & Noble or other book stores have book-readings and...

Re: Salary in NY as an expat

Absolutely.

It's less that I think 130k's a bad salary (it's rather more than I make, after all). I'd go for more than $95k, but somewhere in that range - $90k-$130k - is probably about...

Re: Salary in NY as an expat

For an IT PM in New York City, $130k sounds low to me. Your mileage may vary. Elsewhere in New York State (I promised I wouldn't rant about people moving "To NY" and not specifying... :-P ) that's...

Re: Question About US Mortgage...

Definitely shop around a bit, talk to them, find out rates, get the one or ones you like, and apply for a pre-approval. Having a letter of pre-approval, among other things, helps with making offers...

Re: Any Brits in Albany / Schenectady area?

Sorry for the slow reply... My mother and son and I did go to Jolly's Good Grub Grocery down in Saugerties last Monday. It's small, but they had quite a good selection, and the owners were nice to...

Re: UK Foods in the US Share your finds!

It's a plot. They went there to get all the stuff you wanted before you could make your order, and only just barely made it in time!

Re: Oh boy am I excited and nervous.... Moving from Austin to Portland

I think the most interesting thing about this thread is that when I read the subject I assumed "Portland, Maine", but that's obviously not the Portland in question here. I guess that's what you get...

Re: Any Brits in Albany / Schenectady area?

After investigating more, I'm going to go to Jolly's next week with family. I'll report back after I've been - after all, it's only an hour from Albany.

Re: Driving Stateside...

A piddly little F-150? Bah, tiny things, those. My father has a Chevy 3500 with a 4-door cab, extended bed and dual rear wheels. Then again, he doesn't commute in it; it's mostly for hauling...

Re: Any Brits in Albany / Schenectady area?

I'm over in Troy, though - as I moved to the states at age 4 - I only loosely count as a Brit. :-P

There's the Man of Kent...

Re: UK Foods in the US Share your finds!

While visiting my parents this past weekend (Poughkeepsie, NY), I found out that there's a store in the mall near there which is pretty much an "imported chocolate and candy" store. They have a...

Re: Finally - we have ARRIVED!!

I just have to say, I burst out laughing at work looking at this, when I got to "essentials" and saw what you'd linked to. Expecting things like bedding or cleaning supplies and seeing it was tea,...

Re: buying a villa/apartment in florida

I can't speak to buying things in the area - I live in New York, and have only been to Florida a handful of times, let alone ever considered buying something there - but the thought that immediately...

Welcome to the states. Hope you and all yours enjoy it very much here. :)

Re: Driving Stateside...

I can say with absolute certainty that this varies from area to area. There are some cities and states where, if you aren't an assertive driver, you *will* repeatedly miss exits and fail to get into...

Burnout Paradise is good for that - and you don't normally have cops chasing you. :-P

To add to S. Folinsky's comments on intersections... As they said, if it's an "uncontrolled"...

Re: Driving Stateside...

I vote no, to an extent - every person I know who's taken both, in either order, said the British one was significantly more difficult and thorough. I agree, though, that someone who has driven for...

Re: Driving Stateside...

My father drove a manual for 20 years after moving to this country. He only caved just a couple of years ago because he couldn't get the Jeep he wanted in manual any more.

This is actually infrequently present across the entire country; I've seen them in Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, and California. It was an effort to avoid having left-turn lanes that...

Re: Landlords wants to be named on my rental insurance

I'll just throw out another vote in the "I've never heard of this" department. I'd personally refuse to do so without an explanation that held water to me.

Re: SOCCER / FOOTBALL TEAM REQUIRED (NEW YORK)

I guess I'm assuming you mean NYC, but when you say "New York", do you mean the state or New York City? New York State is 54,556 square miles, and the city is only about 0.86% of it (even if it is...
