Exactly, if the pilot got to 1000ft agl, he would have to find a landing spot up to just over a mile away within 30 degrees either side. Realistically it's less than a mile because you check for...

Not quite, it has a 7:1 glide ratio. All pilots practice power off landings during their training. Landing on water, especially the sea is a last resort , especially if you do not have sea plane...
