Re: Useful French Phrases

"Suffisante" is the best I've found in French, but I still think it's too arrogant, in the sense of a smug know-all. Whereas I want to get over the idea of willingly accepting/being resigned to a...

Re: Useful French Phrases

This occurred to me, too! I was trying to explain to a French person that I risked becoming too complacent (or whatever) during the second half of our confinement. A sort of Stockholm syndrome...

Re: Useful French Phrases

Can any one suggest a French equivalent to "complacent"? I'd say that "complaisant" is a faux ami, and, IMO, "suffisant" or "content de soi" are too arrogant or smug for that particular state of...

Re: Useful French Phrases

OH never used the expression - I had to find out what it means, and its origin. I always thought it meant the opposite, e.g. a wishy-washy introvert, so I'm glad I've never used it!!

Re: Useful French Phrases

Didn't watch this either, mainly because it was dubbed in French at the time it was shown on French TV. But there might be replays in v.o. nowadays - if so, I'll listen out for it....

I've never heard of Hill St Blues - if it was broadcast on French TV, it must have been under a completely different title...

Re: Useful French Phrases

I'm tucking this in the Useful French Phrases section, as I'm ashamed of my ignorance:o.
What does LBCOT mean at the end of a message? (noticed on another forum).

Re: Useful French Phrases

Those of you who aren't aware of this faux ami should know that:

French "isolation" is English "insulation"
English "isolation" is French "isolement"

Re: Useful French Phrases

LOL, I, too, know Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, but No. 3 flummoxed me, never having been pronounced by OH, and I had to check, as per:

Re: Useful French Phrases

Sorry, incorrect! This would be "enfantin" or "puéril" in French.
All of tp's definitions are correct, and I'd add "good-natured" for "bon enfant".

Re: Useful French Phrases

"Et rebelote!", an announcement made during the card game belote, is often announced in general, meaning "here we go again!", or "yet again" when in context.

Re: Useful French Phrases

Everyone says "RAS" nowadays, meaning Rien à Signaler. AFAIK it was originally a military term. "Nothing to report" is the English equivalent, but is there a corresponding military acronym in...

Re: Useful French Phrases

I've never been able to get my head around the term "chiche", which sounds too much like "chouette", "chichi" or "chic", or refers to chick peas.
In fact as an adjective, it means stingy, but you...

Re: Useful French Phrases

A not-very-useful French expression is "ça mouline", used when a little circle goes round and round while you're waiting for something to come up on the computer screen. Presumably from the verb...

Re: Useful French Phrases

Not really a useful French phrase, but I've just heard on French radio that some police activities are too "chronophages". Is this being linguistically pretentious? It's in Larousse, but OH has never...

Re: Useful French Phrases

And...
