The Australian one cannot be blocked, Admittedly if your phone is on silent you won't hear it, but it will still get to the phone.

The idea of a text/SMS is that not everyone has a smartphone, many people still have old style mobiles in Aus, not internet enabled. Also from memory, research showed that in times of disaster texts...

yep, thats the same as our emergency alert. Any mobile, within range of the towers in the affected area, will recieve the text (SMS) message. Doesn't need to be a smartphone, non-internet phones...

They should be just normal text messages, the idea is to keep it simple so no need for internet connection etc.
The Aussie ones (and all the US ones I have come across) have an option for voice...

One issue with tsunami warnings though is that there are so many factors affecting the sie and strength of the tsunami that until it gets close its impossible to know whether it will actually impact...

Its the nightmare scenario for those of us who have to send out the warnings (I do the Queensland ones).
We have to practice monthly, and always check before pressing SEND - are you in the training...
