As above, just politely but firmly say no (I usually say, "Sorry mate, no") but don't miss a step, keep walking away with a purpose like you would when dodging all those "survey" people near Wheelock...

I think there has to be some element of - you'll always feel safer in your hometown than anywhere else, because it IS your hometown and you know it.

I spent from 1981-2002 living in Leeds before...

I've never been to Perth but I'll comment on Sydney, as I'm sure any big city in Australia is much the same.
