In general the areas north of the city (Elizabeth, Smithfield Plains, Daveron Park, parts of Salisbury and Andrews Farm) are recognised to be dodgy areas. Best avoided.

I'd suggest budgeting for longer in a short term furnished let (rather than hotel). It will take you time to get adjusted anyway, and finding somewhere (particularly with only a 3/6 month term) will...
