Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Nothing at all like the car analogy. The rare 60's or older house in a good area is priced way above the inferior rabbit hutches. To go further out would mean moving so far away from work it wouldn't...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I know there is a case for 'decluttering' your life, after all it is just 'stuff', but some stuff you need to have for your hobbies, interests or even working from home.

I know that if I had...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Yes that's true. Although I would rather have the space, than not. Also the garage in most new houses is about as wide as the car so even if you could fit your car in it, you wouldn't be able to open...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I just spent a day looking at many of the shoe boxes that pass for a 3 bedroom detached house these days (all built after the 1980's). I've come away thinking how on earth these tiny things with...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

That's a family income, two people on 20k each. In the past an average house cost the average wage of the average man. The wife did not need to work so she would stay at home to look after the...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

It was 3 times when rates were at more average levels of 6-7%. All those buying in at cheap rates and high prices will be in for a shock when rates return to 6%. But this is why lenders require the...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Those figures of 40K etc suggest that only the very well paid can afford a house and only those with a large deposit too

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Its 6-7 times the average salary locally to by the average local house... so no houses are not affordable

Prices need to fall by 50% to be affordable in relation to the normal 3 times salary. Only...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I wouldn't think decades, maybe they can prop it up until a rate rise is forced on them. When that will be is anyone's guess. They are creating the mother of all bubbles and the mother of all crashes...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Well of course they would. But those who didn't buy into the overpriced housing ponzi scheme are bailing out the borrowers - by the cut in interest on their savings!.. to the tune of billions

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

At least savers are getting a return in Oz. In the UK savers who did the right thing are getting money stolen though negative real interest rates, all to bail out the reckless. Its so immoral

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I would agree that these countries all have high debt. Not every country looks like a basketcase and could in time, pay it back. Eire possibly by exit from the euro and re-issuing of punts and...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

I was just illustrating the level of debt in the UK and how the economy is built upon it. A bit of facts and figures never hurt anyone, and I thought it was interesting reading.

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Difficult to say, because a house is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. We have seen in recent years that 'prepared to pay' value going up because of the willingness of banks to lend...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

This is a very interesting debate with lots of well reasoned opinions being put forward. In terms of the economy, I do happen to side with the view that the UK is potentially a basket case economy....
