Re: The Melbourne thread

My wife has averaged 3 trips in 6 years, with one extra child each time.
The 2nd I also accompanied her - yes I am a child at times...

A few caveats. She goes to Californina - cheaper than...

Re: The Melbourne thread

I quite fancy the idea of 30 acres or so out towards Gippy in retirement. But as that is so far off....we're happy to stick here and get the best of all the worlds we know currently.

Have you...

Re: The Melbourne thread

Well let us know how you go. You're right there is not much around here at 2 and affordable - it's either the main road - or prices suddenly jump. It's also possible that you'd wait a long time...

Re: The Melbourne thread

Well I agree Hevs- it's not exactly a violent crime spot. But as far as trends go, Narre is heading down I think compared to the better parts of the SE. It often comes up in the papers in the way...

Re: The Melbourne thread

It's why I am glad I live at the end of a valley with no real space for more infrastructure where short of evreyone, and I mean, everyone, subdividing it would be hard to get a sea of roofs.

Re: The Melbourne thread

hmmm...perhaps I am a tad mean..for me there is something about it which ain't getting better any time soon and there is a sort of bogan edge to it which I feel will get worse. It does what it says...

Re: The Melbourne thread

The bit around Fountain Gate. Not all of it.

I just feel there are other parts close by that are a lot better and that a recce is worth doing.

Re: The Melbourne thread

Could have told you about Narre Warren and knew it would feature. It was a dump 6 years ago and now it has taken a dive. I feel sorry for the people who moved there when it was farmland and have seen...

Re: The Melbourne thread

I find that it is as busy as you want it to be. If it was any busier I could not live here but you can turn the book to the right page and go out, do your thing. We love slipping in of a Sunday and...

Re: The Melbourne thread

IMHO Margaret, I think it's some of the settled rural people in the UK who might be at risk of the biggest disappointment - unless you move to acreage then you might do better.

You know what, I...

Re: The Melbourne thread

Re: The Melbourne thread

Never used to be like this even 4 years ago. I remember winter 2004 being not far off a Brit one in some ways but skewed warmer.

Winter 2006 seemed to be the start of this chronically dry patch.

Re: The Melbourne thread

Nice one. Good sources. Berwick is definitely the jewel in the crown around there. It is the only place in the SE past Dandenong and industry with a sort of village/cafe feel. What was cow fields all...

Re: The Melbourne thread

North of the Highway mate is the mantra I believe. (Seriously it has been said).

Some people try to pass of Narre as Berwick.

Re: The Melbourne thread

The newer estate locations in Berwick are to the SE what Point Cook et al are to the W.

Both are served with highways (some extended last 4 years or so) of different ages. Commutes are bad in...

Re: The Melbourne thread

You're not wrong.

I think the nicest parts of the Dandenongs are amongst the best places to live in the world, mix between complete serenity and rural life with a sort of Alpine Swiss European...

Re: The Melbourne thread

Apart from the best estate - Pakenham is not a Berwick, defintely not as desirable, and I wonder how Berwick will go sometimes. I think it might decline, especially socially.

The next 20 years...

I happened to be in the Basin a few weeks ago. Nice spot. Would be in my Top 5 places to live. Whingin Poms who hate the suburbs - try moving to a place like there.

Re: The Melbourne thread

Seems to me that new roads do not necessarily guarantee a speedier trip in to the city.

Traffic soon increases to meet and fill capacity(!)

If I drive I go at sparrows fart and this is the way...

Re: The Melbourne thread

There's an element of truth in this. Yes, it is 'cold' but I love my old wood burner, my life is complete. Just as it gets bad, winter ends. The weather takes a decided turn for the better in...
