Have you also downloaded and read the I-130 instructions? It's a separate form from the I-130. We also have a good Wiki on the subject - in the blue bar at the top of each page.

You must get married in order for US immigration to process an immigrant visa for a spouse. The US does not recognize a civil partnership for immigration purposes. The information is not conflicting...
