Wow that doesn't seem very fair ... though I assume you could use a currency loss to offset a currency gain? (but then you'd need to be selling two houses mortgaged in two countries with different...

I see so many financial threads on the US board where the OP ends up with an "Oh, crap" moment ... so many unintended consequences, many of which could be avoided by doing certain things before you...
