And how do they know if you don't declare assets held abroad? Especially if, say, you're a recent immigrant with assets in your previous country of residence.

May be just a phrasing matter here but you don't have to declare your worldwide assets to Portugal if you live here - you declare your worldwide income. A capital gain, however, counts as income in...

You get a personal allowance and some other rebates if resident and not in the NHR regime in Portugal, too.

From your previous posts it sounds as though you might be getting the worst of all...

I can't see where in that link it is stated that foreign-sourced interest or investment income paid to beneficiaries of NHR is taxed at 28% in Portugal.

The table headed "Non Habitual Residents"...

Yes, if above 10,000€ and you apply for NHR in PT, which is exactly my point. It's not automatic that the Dutch tax the pension if it's above 10,000.

Are you sure the NHR would be of no benefit to you even under these circumstances?

I may well have this wrong but I am under the impression that the Dutch authorities will only tax your pension...

Yes, I'm aware of most of that (although paradoxically I think that in that particular case the controversy was over avoidance of inheritance tax, which is a separate issue).

You qualify (as would your PT spouse) if you haven't been taxed in Portugal as a tax resident in any of the previous 5 years and the income isn't PT sourced.
