I've read that somewhere too. Split year for tax residency.
But you lose the full year on the Non Habitual Residency scheme, if you have a large pension that isn't so good.

Well I think that once you have rented for that time & you stay in Portugal & apply for residency then it's pretty obvious it's your intention to live in Portugal.

The persons meeting the requirements under subparagraphs 1(a) or 1(b) shall be deemed to be resident since the first day of their stay in the Portuguese territory, unless they have been resident...

Tax residency is complicated. I think that basically if you move over with the intention of staying you will then be tax resident from the day you arrived.
