can someone describe a typical 'British Village' of 2014?

My impression of one is like the one in 'Heartbeat' TV series - with a few cottages & a high Street that is no more than 100 yards long,...

For exporting to, it seems the nearest is about 4000km away & likely the extra shipping cost could be a factor as could the Australia wage compared to whats made in Asia?

I was in Australia for a period back in the 80's & here I was thinking Canada was the big wide open spaces. What amazes me about OZ is the fact that its so big with relatively low population the cost...
