We live in an on line time & Big Brother is watching but in the case of the tax free import for new immigrants I think it's perfectly reasonable & acceptable to abide by those rules.

Customs didn't check mine but it's also registered as a car of historical interest to Portugal so gets a road tax waiver every year which means they can/could...

Not necessarily...... As I understand it, you'd only need to repay the tax if you actually sold the car and/or if ownership was transferred.

The tax free import can be a very good long term...

It's nothing to do with the value of the car & all to do with the tax you avoided & is repayable on a pro rata basis of 20% per year.

In other words if you avoided €5000 in tax & sell after 3...

As I understand it, you have to have owned the car in it's country of registration for at least one year before you begin the matriculation process & you have to begin that matriculation process...

I think you'll find it's actually 180 days from when you get the Residencia OR import the vehicle to begin the process.

The going rate with most agents is more like €400 & you can do it yourself but bearing in mind the time it can take & the hassle of coping with the bureaucracy & language issues (IMO) it's well worth...
