It obviously does come from the roof but how/where else can you harvest it?

Surely the only way to harvest rainwater is to use the flattish surfaces available to you & any flattish surface is...

Filtering it will be a must......... I harvest the rainwater from the roofs of the house & divert it straight into my duck ponds (old steel baths to be more accurate) & it pretty much always has...

You can always have the water tested at a chemists or local lab if you're concerned about the quality of the water.
