Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

This is indeed the case - you must get the forms validated by a govt vet at Animal Health after your vet has completed them. Straightforward and costs $20.

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

if you fly into UK you must use cargo. If you fly into mainland europe you can take them (or at least one??) in the cabin, or fly them as "excess baggage". You might get more help from the airlines,...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Mine was different from the defra version too. I went with the locally-supplied certificate and all was good.

Good luck!

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

When they brought him out into the baggage area he was standing rigid, legs spread, panting and shaking. His nose was white crusted and I don't think they'd given him any water at all (the rules were...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Aww thanks! Just to clarify, it was the flight that was the stressful bit for my dog, it will be different for every pet of course but yes, I'm very glad we kept that part to a minimum. And hopefully...

Thank you! And thanks incredibly much for all your help during my preparations for the Big Trip.

Luckily one part my dog did quite learn to like after a shaky start was the trains (feeding him...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Pooch and I made it to the UK in one piece without extraordinary problems, the trouble is my lil old brain is too tired and jetlagged to write a coherent report. So, if anyone has any questions about...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

I popped by the airport info desk the other day and asked about the procedure - apparently at check-in you have to take your pet out and hold it while the crate goes through the scanner.

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

In that environment most cats would run - my pooch would too.

If they have to open the door of the crate they do it in a closed room. I suspect they're quite used to dealing with animals who are a...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

 cute!

:fingerscrossed: that mine enjoys this trip so much he'll do the same from now on. Maybe that's why he's unpacking - to make room in the suitcase for himself?

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

I'm using Stena, but there are others that take pets travelling without a car - google will do it. I'm hoping the ferry part works out really well as it would be a good way to enable european...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Four at once sounds like too much for sure, especially since carriers have to follow IATA rules so are way bigger than the actual pet.

Do you know anyone who might welcome a free return flight in...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

So, today we did paperwork for the pooch to go from Canada to UK via the Netherlands. It went like this:

Vet gave him three huge praziquantel pills, for tapeworm, which he swallowed with relish....

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Train. The trains in France are superb, and also dog friendly.

(I still reckon the ferry's a better bet than the tunnel, more fun AND you get a proper lying-down sleep too!)

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

If anyone is getting paperwork approved by the govt vets in the VANCOUVER area, ie near YVR airport, please note that they are cleverly signed as the "Food Inspection Agency". No wonder the guy said...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Yep, you still need a pet passport. (I JUST GOT OURS TODAY - HOORAY!!!!!)

I agree, depends on the pets and the humans involved. My dog will love it - he plays on his cute looks and gets fuss and...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Check the restrictions on numbers of pets one person can take as excess baggage - IDK if there is one.

I looked into the cost of taxis through the tunnel, forgot now but posted on...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

:rofl::rofl: picturing a bag of five wriggling chihuahuas.

With the cabin issue, it's more a question of size than weight - they have to comfortably under the seat, which isn't much room!

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Worth considering if you are flexible - if you fly direct to UK you must fly your pets as "cargo", costing $1000s. If you fly to mainland europe first, you can take them (unless they are huge) as...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012
