Re: Gibraltar 2

I've been in (on?) Gib only twice, but liked it both times. The first time in 1975 or '76 when we were living in Fuengirola - the Spanish immigration officers were on a go-slow, I remember, in...

Re: Gibraltar 2

No, I understand the point all right, Ellis. And if we were having this conversation in Gib with Spaniards listening in, I might be silent - or maybe not. But this is a world-wide BE thread, and we...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Oh come on, Mike. "Colony" is just a word! Writing from a British Overseas Territory (a BOT,, no less!), I - like most of us here - casually refer to our Islands as a colony. We also speak of "gringo...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Fred. If I recall correctly, didn't the pro-Spain voters total 44? I've often wondered: what happened to them? Were they identified and ostracised? Did they scarper? Have they died since? Enquiring...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Hey, Fred. This news from Cricinfo is not good. Fancy the Gibs getting thrashed by the Germans! Well, I use the term "Germans" loosely, but still... Looking at the German bowling line-up, we can see...

Re: Gibraltar 2

The Committee of 24 comprises a bunch of seat-warmers interested in nothing but their own comfort and vanity. I don't think anybody takes them seriously. The Spanish government is just grandstanding....

Here's the latest on the Panama Papers "scandal". I presume the firm will continue to service its Gibraltar clients through some local firm.

Re: Gibraltar 2

Boys, boys, boys! This is meant to be an informative thread, but it's being spoiled by way too much backbiting and you-did-no-you-did-no-you-did and I-must-have-the-last-word childishness. Could we...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Well, I was going to say "services", but "wealth" is good. Tax-free wealth, of course. Just a brief summary for the uninitiated... "Offshore" tax havens provide clerical services in environments that...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Cayman made the list! Now all the EU has to do is persuade the world's international trading companies and banks not to do business here... The EU people don't seem to perceive the irony in their...

Re: Gibraltar 2

If anybody can see off the ridiculous Decolonisation Committee, Fabian Picardo can. I met him at a Commonwealth human-rights seminar in Gib in 2004, and was most impressed. That UN Committee is...

Well, I didn't know that about Fiat Motors, but as an international company it is free to choose where to base itself so as to benefit its shareholders the most. Today, it could be based in Cayman or...

Re: Gibraltar 2

I myself have never seen anything wrong with the term "tax haven" - or "paradis fiscal" as the French say it. Gibraltar and Cayman and several other places advertise themselves as places that don't...

We've gone a bit off-topic, here, but the FIFA scandal is way too juicy to ignore! Here's what our local paper had to say about it:

Dear oh dear, Fred! Don't say that out loud. No larger a load than Cayman or Gib, though, probably. Or indeed most of the other places on Wikipedia's list. We all come in for our fair share of...

Re: Gibraltar 2

Also, I imagine Madeira's offshore financial centre modelled itself on Gibraltar's. That was a while after WWII, but still, the connection must have come in useful. It wouldn't surprise me to learn...

Re: Gibraltar 2

For politicians in high-tax countries, "unfair tax practices" mean "lower taxes than we have", or sometimes simply "no income-tax". Remind me, Fred: does Gib levy Income Tax? We don't have any here...

Re: Gibraltar 2

It's a largely unappreciated fact that the Overseas Territories are mostly of genuine value to the UK. Cayman, for instance, is believed to be the regional HQ of MI6: Britain's eyes and ears in this...
