I have also always found every consular officer I've spoken to, in 5 or 6 different countries, to be extremely helpful and pleasant. The magic phrase to start all phone calls and that opens all doors...

It's not too bad to be honest. They quote "3 weeks" (not "at least 3 weeks") for a first passport by post in the UK and it took about 4-5 for us.

Take some paperwork with you (the same you would for his passport application) and be prepared to do some talking at immigration. If you can prove that he is a citizen then (I think) they are not...

I've never used it but I know it can be used for very substantial information - I found out about it on the blog "Transplant Monologues" where a US citizen used it to get the reason that her spouse...

I'm pretty sure that having a consular birth certificate will certainly ensure that they don't deny your son any problems in the future, he'll get plenty of them just like we all do :D
