This doesn't surprise me at all, I'd expect it. But financial checks on someone's current and previous affairs for a 'normal' (non-gov/finance/security type) job seems extreme.

Just not heard of...

So it's not for everyone, just senior hires?

I've never heard of it before, digging into someone's private life. Perhaps for security reasons but not in general 'industry'.
