Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Lorna - I hate that whole 'let's tar the entire group with the same brush' thing which they seem to have in Italian schools. My colleague was just telling me how her 12 year old son's entire class...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Just got to vent for a moment. At my 4 year old's preschool lots of parents bring younger children in strollers to pick up their kids. However, the school (built in the 19th century) has a set of...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

I'm thinking it was a part of Rome which starts with a P?

The other parents at my daughter's school are great. Just got back from hanging out with a bunch of them at one of their...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

beesknees - the problem is that even though your son is British, a child's residenza is considered to be the same as that of his parents. So, since you're a tourist and not residente, he's a tourist...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Lack of teacher training? :(

How does one become a teacher in Italy then?

beesknees - are you on a 3 month tourist visa? Hate to take their side (and I don't think I've ever agreed with an...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Good for you, Lorna, for sticking your neck out! Italian schools need a lot more parents like you.

This thread is really scaring me for what's coming up in the future for my daughters....

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Now I'm getting a bit scared about what is coming up for my daughter. She's only 3 but just started scuola materna at a school in central Rome which goes up until the kids are 12. It's kind of...

That does sound difficult. :(

Can anyone explain how it works here with supply teachers when a teacher is on mat leave? A started scuola materna and there was a head teacher and an assistant. ...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Thanks for the advice upthread. A is too little (she'll turn 3 in July) for campi estivi but it turns out that the Comune has one asilo nido open during July. So we signed her up to go there for...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Well my daughter is only at asilo nido going into scuola materna next year but I'm a bit shocked that the asilo is closed for the whole of both July and August. What are we going to do since we both...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

We felt the same when trying to find a place for our daughter last year. Lucky you having so many options to chose from in Modena. Here in Rome there are very few public asilo nidos and we're the...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

OMG indiebird. :frown: Unfortunately living here in Rome I see this kind of scene every single morning on the metro on the way to work.

I've got a question for you all. I took the morning off...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Not sure if this is an Aussie thing but to punting on something can be gambling - like 'I might take a punt on that horse.' And punters are customers - not just for women of the night but pretty...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

As a non-English person who is a native speaker of English I also want to point out that the English language isn't just spoken by English people (well, duh!). In fact there are a lot more of us...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

You called? ;)

Testa - Glad you had a coffee with the Aussie mum and have ironed things out. There's also a big expat scene here in Rome so I know what you mean. I quite like it though as I've...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Testa - but aren't these quite small kids we're talking about? Surely if a 5 year old (sorry not sure how old your daughter is) takes it into her head that Jesus is 'pretend' the nuns and other kids...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Ironically enough, a lot of those non-English speaking background kids I went to school with were of Italian background. When I was growing up in that area of Sydney there were lot of little old...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

I went to a school in the 80s which was 60% non English speaking background kids (in Sydney) and really it was all fine. I think a lot of the time when Italian parents complain about too many...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

My (state) school in Australia was pretty basic back in the 80s. I remember that they bought some brand spanking new computers (probably commodore 64s ) and someone at the school stole them a...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.

Not sure about up north in Verona but here in Rome there are usually rules and there are ways to get around them. I'm not a huge fan of this aspect of Rome living but I guess when in Rome...

Re: Schools, teachers, kids and parents. Education in general.
