Re: Pet Peeves?

A number of stores around here made a majority of their checkouts self scan a few years ago, but before too long changed back to staffed lanes with just a couple of self scans.

Re: Pet Peeves?

A young guy followed me home one time and entered the apartment building behind me before the door swung shut (I was oblivious). As I fumbled for my keys, he reached up and tried to pull my knickers...

Re: Pet Peeves?

You are right; I lived in a long-established Irish neighborhood, within walking distance of the botanical gardens, which was just starting to become Puerto Rican. But this was in the 1970s, Howard...

Re: Pet Peeves?

I can deal with roaches (or could, not sure how I would do these days!), but would have been out there in two seconds if it had been a mouse problem! We had a big D-Con budget in that place . . . but...

Re: Pet Peeves?

Happily, the boyfriend in question was extremely easy on the eye ;) and I proceeded to live in said roach motel for four years after I moved to the US!

Re: Pet Peeves?

I spent my very first night in the US at my boyfriend's rathole apartment in the Bronx. I put a glass of water beside the bed as I always do and woke up and took a sip during the night. All these...

Re: Pet Peeves?

That's insane! There are oft-quoted reports out there that taking a 10 minute shower uses less water than a bath, but they are talking about filling the bath way up -- way higher than any Brit would...

Re: Pet Peeves?

That's for sure. The droughts we have had in CT the last two summers have made me very solicitous of our well water -- only flushing when essential, collecting the cold water when I'm having to run...

Re: Pet Peeves?

Just a very ritzy horse boarding farm, that wouldn't think of using chemicals on their pastures -- but they do have a very effective manure management system!;) Actually a river that runs through my...

Re: Pet Peeves?

There is little danger of pesticides where I live and I certainly don't use them on my property. Homeowners can get their water tested if they are concerned. Nothing unnatural has ever shown up in...

Re: Pet Peeves?

So do you mean that the town supplied the well water, it didn't come from your own well in the yard? Perhaps that is the difference -- my water comes right off my property -- or rather from deep...

Re: Pet Peeves?

This is my fourth house with well water and I've never experienced anything like that! Just good fresh water, no taste, no color, no odor.

Re: Pet Peeves?

I have become so used to well water that whenever I'm in a place with chlorinated city water the smell, however faint, is unbearable. I was in Philadelphia last year and could hardly brush my teeth,...

Re: Pet Peeves?

Or at any time of the year. A while ago Target had a special line by Missoni that my friend was interested in. She went to the store the morning that it went on sale, and there were a bunch of...

Re: Pet Peeves?

I understand that it is because they stopped using the treated water supplied by Detroit and instead began drawing the water directly from the contaminated Flint River.

Re: Pet Peeves?

Your example is irrelevant, as in the US, where program is used in both contexts, people would actually say, "I just watched a show about programs." However, both versions are kind of moot, as the...

Re: Pet Peeves?

The first time I went back and saw those dinky things, I couldn't believe how stupid and useless they were. People do indeed drive straight over the top of them! They're neither use nor ornament.

Re: Pet Peeves?

This one can be difficult -- once I was talking to someone, sunglasses removed, and they suddenly went off at me about what was I scowling at them for. My eyes were just screwed up because I was...

Re: Pet Peeves?

Haven't ploughed through all 14 pages to see if this has been mentioned, but . . . I'm driven mad by TV commercials that say "Fred and Mary owed an extremely large amount of taxes, but we were able...
