Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

People borrow as much as they are able to, that's human nature. When they are able to borrow 8 times their income, a lot of people do it. This is one of the reasons why we're in the mess we are. If...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Yes. You suggested one option was for people to stop buying expensive housing. The majority of people can only do this with leverage. If banks and government reigned in lending ratios, prices would...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I agree, ABCD - but here you are criticising the banks and goverment because it's their lax lending that got us to this situaton. People wil always try and live in as nice a home as possible and who...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Important correction! I wrote a post the other day about how the bankrupt UK couldn't do another "garage sale" a la Thatcher but how wrong I was! It seems there's always one more "asset" to sell to...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Aussie housing stock is the most over-valued in the world, so these rate rises are really important in order to stop that and hopefully reverse it to some degree so young people can realistically...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I note Mervyn King spent a few moments in Stockholm at the weekend. That ain't gonna help matters either.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

The Japanese did this up and down the Qld coast before their economy collapsed, so it's nothing new. Indeed half the London property market is currently being held up by Russian investors....

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

It's difficult, but I think over time sterling will recover some of its value against the AUD. While the British economy is properly ruined, there is another element to this rate which is the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Difficult. My instinct is that he could go any day - but I've been saying that for months and he just sticks around. All through the expenses scandal, etc. "Insiders" say he'll could go before the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I think we're edging closer to a full-blown currency crisis and a run on sterling. The rate could be bloody anything in 10 weeks' time, frankly.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I'm not so hopeful this time round, sadly. Perhaps it might get a reprieve when Gordon Brown is thrown out of Downing Street next year - but who knows?

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Exactly what they want you to do - this is why the devalued sterling so much. Help exports and make people spend money on housing when they didn't really want to. IMO houing in the UK still has 40%...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I agree - very hard. My less restrained half is thinking $1.3 and the army on the streets of some British cities. However, the half that reads books thinks that Britain will hit the bottom in the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

UK interest rates will probably be well north of 4% in 12/18 months' time - so factor that in. Where Aussie ones will be, I don't know.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

$1.60 I could see happening easily. The UK economy is smashed to pieces. It's external debt is 9 trillion USD. Australia's is 700 billion, to put that in perspective - getting on for ten times...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

OK interesting. My concern would be how flighty young people are. If I followed them back to the dark and drizzle and got settled and then they told me they were moving to Melbourne or Dallas or...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I'm quite interested in this talk of retiring back to the UK because I would have thought the total opposite would apply. If you came here in your 20s or 30s you would have a family here and they...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Sounds great. I could spend October - April in Aus and go to Spain for the four months in between. A few trips over to UK for family would be possible, but still live in a nice climate. The only...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

That's the way to do it. They start teaching languages way too late in UK. Any one of us could have been fluent ina second laguage before we were ten years old. So short sighted.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I could handle Spain - if I had to live in Europe - only about 45 million people but a serious housing bust and higher unemployment. France has serious civil unrest problems with its 6 million+...
