Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Provide the other side of the analysis then from the dodgy right-wing papers, or at least point out what he's saying which is wrong?

Here's part of the Telegraphs opinion on it. Not exactly...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I am exposed regularly to govt and local govt IT projects here in Aus and let me assure you the picture is not better. Similarly the case in the US.

The truth is that govts have different time...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Not good to do nothing, but when you're in a hole why dig? The UK was not at risk of being downgraded like a Greece or Ireland. They could have made some targeted cuts, and added a stimulative...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

This article sums it up pretty well IMO.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/oct/24/will-hutton-spending-review-economy

Its a massive punt. Noone can say what might happen because its...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I know, I saw your comments in another thread, and I'm not at all surprised that builders are busy because I see them every day around my area remodelling crappy homes into million dollar mansions :D...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I think it will be sooner than that, though I dont know if it will be a megatsunami. The only way it could come in 10 years, IMO, is if that 10 years is essentially a period of price stagnation.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Quite interesting the timing of this data being released, given the IMF yesterday said that the UK housing market was way overvalued. Wonder if they had a sneak peek :-)

I certainly would not buy...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

This is the beggar-thy-neighbour approach - everyone tries to devalue their currency to stimulate export demand, and so kickstart their economy. Problem is, there need to be some importers as well as...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Another thing I did, both moving to the US and to Aus, is leave your money in GBP for time being, and then use your cards to pay for stuff here. I found the rates I got were actually pretty...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Are you out of your mind, have you seen the coverage? Basically the coalition is close to civil war, the LibDems are raging about the 7Bn bank bonuses this yr, and want to tax the snot of of the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I guess I should have been clearer, I meant perhaps the clearance rate is in the 20s, but in fact they're all selling afterwards and not reflected in the numbers.

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

IMO, the Aussie is now topping. Its hard to see the economic picture getting a whole lot stronger going forward (i.e. the markets perception of Aussie economy is extremely good, so it will have a...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Sounds like a smart strategy to me. Personally I changed most of my GBP in the 1.7-1.8 range, because I figured it wouldnt go a lot higher, I felt happier having the money in AUD, and I can earn...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Spot on IMO.

Thats really what this thread should be about. A lot of people seem to be sitting on GBPs saying they're waiting for 1.8 or 2 or whatever. People need to wake up to the fact that the...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

You're right there are always spikes, and any flight to safety should boost the GBP. Though not massively, difficult to see any spike going above 1.8.

But a lot of the discussion in this thread is...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Fair point on Greece and the Euro crisi.

But your last point here is stating the obvious a bit - obviously if the AUD goes down against the USD there is a fair chance it is also going down against...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

TBH, I'm not really that clear what you're saying here. I think the GBP hitting 1.80 was most definitely related to the UK elections, at least thats what the FT and WSJ seemed to indicate.

Agreed...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Outcome of the election no big deal - policies are likely the same whatever outcome.

Main reason the GBP tanked a bit after the election is there was a) a very big issue to be resolved with UK...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

I have a few GBP left and am just waiting for 1.75 and then they're gone. Would have changed them already, but NAB were not kind enough to give me a proper credit card until couple days ago :-(

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Can't agree with you here. If anything, I think the opposite. All the City boys are so happy there's a Tory govt in there cutting public spending that there is a significant "honeymoon effect".

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

All eyes on the European bank stress tests... if they go well, E will get a boost and the GBP will stay where it is... if they go bad, GBP might get a big boost...

US economy looking a little...

Re: 1.93's A$ to the Pound!!!

Fair enough. I think $2 is a good rule of thumb also, when comparing etc. But the issue IMO is that the UK will not easily re-establish its pre-GFC position in the world economy, because of the...
