I said exactly this on here a few weeks back and was rightly (I think, on reflection) advised that the lower octane is a red herring. At the end of the day, because of the better climate (generally)...

An advantage of a job in the public sector is the tendency for union/block-agreed pay rises (which are then supplemented with performance related bonuses).

Woo-hoo, I got a 1.2% rise this year....

Because of the high exchange rate, petrol is one of those things that is particularly good value for money currently.
Not that I am particularly disagreeing with you, just chucking a few extras...
